On The Bright Side – Mary Howell – 032113

As I thought about something that would be appropriate for the first week of spring, memories of yesteryear came to mind.

I remember that my Dad always planted a spring time garden.  He would plant potatoes on February 14 and if the weather rotted the first planting of the potatoes, he would re-plant on March 14.  Our Dad would later plant peas, corn, onions, and tomatoes for us and would even try his hand at growing watermelons.

It would be Mom’s job to shell the peas along with my sisters and my help.  I remember in our beautiful backyard which had nine oak trees, making it perfect shade for preparing the fresh vegetables for our freezer.  I remember how much fun it was to sit on the ground which was covered with clover.  I would spend hours looking for a four-leaf clover while my Mom and sisters shelled peas and shucked corn.

One afternoon while we were all outside, our neighbor’s cat came to visit. A stray dog also wandered in the yard and chased the cat up a tree.  The kitten went all the way to the top and we tried to coax her down without much success.  The cat cried and cried but seemed to be afraid to come down from its lofty perch.  The cat stayed up the tree all night until the next morning, when our Good Samaritan offered his help.  Mr. Buford Hughes backed his pick-up as close as possible to the tree and steadied a tall ladder and left it in the back of the pick-up.  He then carefully climbed to the top of the ladder and reached his hand to bring the scared kitten to safety.

During the 1970’s, I remember a popular song with the words, “I’m as helpless as a kitten up a tree”.

During our lifetime, we often find ourselves up a tree.  We get into predicaments and we can’t seem to find a way out.  Then God reaches out to us and pulls us back to safety.  Isn’t it wonderful that God is always available when we trust Him with our problems even though we are up a tree?  He loves us and gives us a life on the bright side.
