On The Bright Side Mary Howell 12/12/12

Filed under: Mary Howell — Freddie Keel @ 6:16 am

Today’s date, December 12, 2012 is unique since the date has three 12’s and only occurs once every hundred years.

The number twelve is very significant in the measuring of time.  Since there are 12 a.m. hours and 12 p.m. hours, twelve numbers appear on the faces of our clocks.  Even multiplier of 12 comprises our minutes and hours.  For instance, five times twelve seconds make a minute and five times twelve make an hour.

In the Bible, the number twelve was also important because Jacob had twelve sons.  Each of Jacob’s sons’ descendants made up the twelve tribes of Israel.

In the New Testament, Jesus had twelve disciples who carried out His ministry after His crucifixion.

A dozen is composed of twelve like units except when it come to a baker’s dozen which has thirteen leaving one for the baker to eat.

During the Christmas holidays, we sing about the twelve days of Christmas.  The words of the song often bring smiles to our holidays festivities.

“Twelve drummers drumming, Eleven pipers piping, Ten lords a-leaping,

Nine ladies dancing, eight maids a-milking, Seven swans a-swimming,

Six geese a-laying, Five gold rings, Four calling birds, Three French hens,

Two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree.”

To me that would be just too many birds!

Since 12-12-12 only occurs once every 100 years, I did a computer search to see what occurred one hundred years ago in 1912.

New Mexico and Arizona became states.  The Girl Scouts, which was originally called Girl Guides, was formed in Savannah.  Mrs. William Howard Taft planted the first cherry tree in Washington, D. C. On April 14, 1912 the Titanic sank at 2:27 a.m. off Newfoundland as the band played on.

Historical events of interest occurred in 1812 included the Congress authorized war bonds to finance the war of 1812.  On June 18, the War of 1812 began as the United States declared war against Britain.

Let us not forget that every day is unique regardless of the date, month or year.  Every day is a gift from God and we can enjoy days on the bright side.
