On The Bright Side

Mary Howell

August is the 8th month in the procession of twelve months of the year.  Although August has no official holiday, it is still an unusual month.

In recent years the number of August weddings has exceeded June weddings.

August is also one of the hottest months of the year with temperatures soaring above the 100° mark.  Historically August has seen some of the hottest news stories in our American history.  President Richard Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974. Marilyn Monroe, one of the hottest Hollywood stars, was found dead on August 5.  Elvis Presley also passed away on August 4, 1977.  Princess Diana met her untimely death on August 31, 1997.

Some significant events that happened in August were that Christopher Columbus set sail for the new world on the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria.  After World War II, President Truman announced the surrender of Japanese forces on August 14, 1945.  Hawaii was admitted to the Union as the 50th state.

Other historical events were that Babe Ruth broke all records by hitting 500 home runs in the eighth month.  Gold was discovered on August 16, 1896.  President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Social Security Administration.

Four of our presidents were born in August which were Herbert Hoover, Lyndon B. Johnson, William Clinton and our present Barack Obama.  Other celebrities born in August were Alex Haley, Frances Scott Key, Claude Debussy, Herman Melville, Ernie Pyle, Oliver W. Holmes, Louie Armstrong, Alfred Hitchcock, Cecil  B. DeMille, Alfred Lord Tennysen, Napoleon Bonaparte, Davy Crockett, Orville Wright and Mother Teresa.

August brings the beginning of school with parents rushing to buy school supplies and clothes while their children lamenting over returning to the classroom.

Football players don their equipment and padding for their brutal summer workouts.

Although the weather is hot, try to keep cool and enjoy summer August days on the bright side.
