Health Benefits of Raw Milk By: Tadpole’s Oldest Daughter

We made the change to raw milk less than a year ago.  Sometimes I questioned this decision because it was “risky.”  When you follow the crowd and dictocrate rules, you have someone to blame if there’s a problem.  If you jump off the mainstream, then you’re taking your health in your own hands.   Once you do it is freeing.

It is true I could get ill from bad bacteria by drinking raw milk.  But if I avoid raw milk because of this risk, I need to quit cantaloupe, spinach, peanut butter and many other grocery store foods that have killed people in the last 10 years.  The fact is that milk collected hygienically from a healthy grass-fed cow or goat on a small family farm is very safe, and the benefits far outweigh the risks. I’d be statistically much more likely to contract E coli from my local produce department than from that farmer’s cow.

Raw Milk

Enzymes All available to your body <10% remain.  Necessary to help digest food
Protein 100% present (all 22 amino acids) Severely altered, much less available to your body
Fats All 500 saturated & unsaturated Fats available.  (Fatty acids are the source of all flavor & all fat-soluble vitamins.  Fatty acids are essential for every body cell to function.) Homogenization breaks up the fat particles and makes them more damaging to the arteries and heart.
Minerals 100% available:  Calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, otassium, sodium, choride, sulphur.  Also: trace minerals! Calcium is altered, leaving only 50% or less absorbed by the body.  Other minerals are less available, as well.  Also, enzymes are lost that serve as catalysts for the assimilation of minerals into your body.
Vitamins All fat and water-soluble vitamins are 100% available to your body. Up to 66% loss of Vitamins A, D, & E.  Loss of Vitamin C > 50%.  All water-soluble vitamins are lost at 38-80%.  Vitamins B-6 & B-12 are virtually destroyed!
Carbohydrates The lactose in raw milk is slowly and safely absorbed.  Many lactose-intolerant people can safely drink raw milk. The Lactose is more rapidly absorbed, possibly leading to various health problems.  The easy and fast absorption of lactose is also believed by many doctors to cause lactose sensitivity and intolerance in many people.
Bacteria 95% of the bacteria in raw milk is good for you.  This good bacteria also retards the growth of any possible bad bacteria in the milk.  Raw milk will keep for several weeks in the refrigerator.  Even sour raw milk us usually safe! No good bacteria remain to retard the growth of the bad bacteria.  Therefore, the only bacteria that grows back is pathogenic.  Sour pasteurized milk is always dangerous!

Raw milk from grass-fed cows was actually used as a medicine in the early part of the 20th century.  Raw milk – straight from the cow/goat – has been called the “stem cell” of foods.  Studies have shown that children who drink raw milk have lower rates of allergies and asthma.

Lactose intolerance is wide spread in our country.  Many people who are lactose intolerant have found that raw milk is easily digestible for them and has improved their strength, skin tone, stamina, weight issues and over all health.  Unheated milk contains its full complement of enzymes and lactase-producing bacteria needed by our bodies to break down and assimilate the milk sugar lactose. These helpful bacteria are killed in the pasteurization/homogenization process.

Taste is another benefit.  Raw milk tastes real.  Our taste buds have become so dumbed down we can no longer enjoy the pleasure of real food; instead must have bland milk with our highly processed cereals.  When we change to real food, our taste buds must become acclimated to enjoy these new flavors.  Unfortunately, this has been lost in much of our society and if it looks weird or smells strange we refuse to eat.  It has gotten so bad, many of our children will physically uncontrollably gag when forced to eat something new.

This is more than a milk choice.  It is a health decision and simple freedom we need to take back in our society whether we drink raw or not.  If we’re not allowed to make this choice, then we’ll be ‘protected’ from many other pleasures in life.  It is also indicative of our consumer mental state in America.  Instead of choosing the status quo because it is all we know, maybe it is time to make this choice (either way) because we’re educated consumers.

We take in the words, “Milk, it does your body good” and see the cute celebrity with a milk moustache.  But they’ve just given us a jingle and attractive photo – no real information.  I’m no longer buying the jingle or listening to the Hollywood celebrity.   I want the facts.
