On The Bright Side

Mary Howell

Today is the fourth of July, 2012, the 236th birthday of our great America.  Today let us thank God for the freedoms that we enjoy in the United States.

The patriotic hymn America The Beautiful is one of my favorite songs.  The words were inspired by the Garden of the Gods which is located in Colorado.  A pictorial book called America the Beautiful has been written by a descendant of the song’s writer, Katharine Lee Bates.

            O beautiful for spacious skies,

            For amber waves of grain,

            For purple mountain majesties

            Above the fruited plain.

            America! America!

God shed His grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood

            From sea to shining sea.

            O beautiful for heroes proved

            In liberating strife

Who more than self their country loved

            And mercy more than life.

            America! America!

            May God thy gold refine

            Till all success be nobleness

            And every gain divine.

            O beautiful for patriot dream

            That sees beyond the years

            Thine alabaster cities gleam

            Undimmed by human tears

            America! America!

God shed His grace on thee

And crown they good with brotherhood

            From sea to shining sea.

Let us thank God today for our America, the Beautiful, our home sweet home.
