On The Bright Side
January 11, 2012

This week’s “ On The Bright Side” is dedicated in honor of my sister Clara Murphy, who celebrates her birthday today.
I was blessed to have 2 dear wonderful sisters, Jane and Clara. They were surprised to have a baby sister when they were 12 and 9 years old. Clara became my playmate. She read Little Golden Books to me so often that I memorized the words and would correct her if she made a mistake. The 3 of us were privileged to attend Hemphill School, where we all graduated.
After Jane went to college and I started 1st grade Clara became my protector. I remember one time when I climbed to the top of the monkey bars and fell. Clara was the first one to run to see about me.
When Clara was a high school senior she was named “Our Darling” in the Hornet yearbook. She was also named “Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow”. We thought this was funny since all Clara could cook was popcorn.
Just a few days after she graduated she married her sweetheart and soul mate Neal Murphy. After more than 53 years of marriage Clara is a wonderful homemaker and gourmet cook. She is a gracious hostess and loves to share her goodies with her family and friends.
Although Clara never got to go to college she had a 26 year career in the medical field working with physicians in San Augustine, Houston, Denver, Fort Worth, Birmingham and Burlington North Carolina.
She and Neal retired to East Texas in 1085 to be near their aging parents, Clarence Howell and Cecil & Alice Murphy.
Since returning to San Augustine she has found her calling as a piano teacher. She presently has 20 students, who come to her music studio every week. Clara has played to organ or piano in every church wherever she and Neal lived.. She and my friend Rene’ faithfully take dictation as I rattle off  “On The Bright Side” to them every week.

Happy Birthday Clara
I  Love You Dearly,
